University of Southern Maine’s Class of 2024 secured their diplomas as they walked across the stage Saturday.
This year’s commencement ceremony took place at the Cross-Insurance Arena in Portland.
Tom Caron was the commencement speaker. He is a sports reporter in the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
Hamido Hassan was this year’s student speaker. She immigrated to the United States, moving to Lewiston with her family when she was 6 years old. She shared her story and gave a sendoff to her class.
"Today is a celebration of years filled with hard work, resilience, and dedication. Congratulations to each and every one of us," Hassan said.
Thousands filled into the stadium to support graduating friends and family.
Maine’s Total Coverage spoke with some of the grads ahead of the ceremony.
Emily Rich is graduating magna cum laude from the nursing program. "It's been a long four years, worked really hard, glad to be done,” she said.
Another nursing major, Sadie Coon, is graduating summa cum laude. She shared how proud she was of her peers. “Making it through nursing school is very challenging, and without everybody, we wouldn't have made it. So, congrats to the Class of 2024 of U.S.M. and the School of Nursing," she said.
Matthew Josselyn studied mechanical engineering and is graduating summa cum laude. He says it’s been a long road to get to this point. "It feels good to be able to finish. I've been in school for a long time, and it's nice to not be at school, not have to do homework, and yeah, just be done," he said.
