Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is set to offer Zimbabwean Kalisto Pasuwa a one-year contract as Malawi National Football Team coach, Times Sport has learnt.
This follows recommendations from the association’s technical sub-committee, whose members met in Salima District on Saturday.
During the meeting, committee members reportedly unanimously endorsed Pasuwa for the Flames vacant coaching job.
But the recommendations are subject to approval by the association’s executive committee members, whose first quarterly meeting is scheduled for early next month.
Inside sources confided in us that Pasuwa, who is already in the country, would be given freedom to choose his backroom staff.
“It was a fruitful meeting and we made our recommendations.
It will be up to the Fam Executive Committee to make a final decision on the matter,” a well-placed source said Tuesday.
Reports suggest that Pasuwa would bring some of his trusted lieutenants from Zimbabwe, including Mike Ngore—who worked with him at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Both Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka were not available for their comments Tuesday.
Recently, Fam President Fleetwood Haiya hinted at the possibility of offering the incoming Flames coach a one-year contract.
“We, as exco, are going to come up with resolutions on who we are going to appoint on a full-time basis. But the likelihood is that it might not be a two or three-year contract. We do not want to get carried away,” Haiya said.
The recommendations from the technical sub-committee also follow recommendations from the National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) last month.
The NFCA proposed Bullets coach Peter Mponda, Alex Ngwira, MacDonald Mtetemera and Pritchard Mwansa among his assistants.
Early this month, NFCA Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni told our sister paper The Sunday Times that the body recommended Pasuwa.
“The pair delivered as interim coaches; so, we will be happy if they continue. But we know that both coaches are on high demand and, as such, it is up to Fam to decide,” Nankhuni said.
The Flames are expected to take part in the 2025 African Nations Championship (Chan) play-offs alongside six other nations namely Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Gabon, Gambia and South Africa next month.
The seven nations will be fighting for the remaining two slots at the Chan finals to be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
In March, Malawi is scheduled to face Namibia in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.
