Travel World Cup: Iceland and Croatia through but Argentina crashes out

As the world focuses on the footballing prowess of 32 nations, here at Telegraph Travel we have a much more pressing question on our minds: which is the world’s greatest holiday destination?

To find out, we are pitting the very same countries against each other in our first ever Twitter #TravelWorldCup.

In Group D, Iceland cruised to the top spot with 42 per cent of the vote, joining Egypt, Spain and Australia who also topped their groups.

Croatia came in a comfortable second place with 31 per cent of the vote, while Argentina took home 22 per cent and Nigeria struggled to get out of the blocks with just 5 per cent of people selecting it as the best holiday destination.

This result reflects the ongoing rise in popularity of the island nation. In 2010, just over 450,000 people visited Iceland in search of staggering scenery, a multitude of waterfalls and geothermal geysers. Now a little under 2 million visitors come each year.

Croatia has also seen its tourism industry boom in recent years, with 7.7 million visitors in 2005 rising to double that - 15.5 million - in 2017. Dubrovnik has become so popular that it has struggled with overtourism concerns in recent years, prompting the mayor to take drastic action to reduce footfall in the walled city.

We are now half-way through the group stages of the #TwitterWorldCup. In Group E we have Costa Rica, Serbia, Brazil and Switzerland vying for top spot.
