Punches and flying chairs overshadowed alley-oops and 3-pointers at recent basketball game.

A regional basketball championship in the Dominican Republic has been indefinitely cancelled after fans and players participated in an all-out melee Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Dominican Basketball Federation announced the postponement of the remainder of the tournament after the ugly incident marred the tightly contested Game 2 of the Haina Superior Basketball Tournament Finals.

With 4:58 remaining in the third quarter and El Molino holding a 48-40 lead over Club Centro, a fan reached over a barrier separating guests from the court and hit one of the players from Club Centro, according to an official from the Federation who spoke to DailyMail.com.

A wild brawl ensued which was caught on video.

Short-staffed due to budget constraints, security at the arena in the town of Haina tried to restore order but not before fans from both sides starting littering the court with bottles and chairs.

One of the many video clips that has gone viral since Sunday night's fisticuffs shows the moment a player from El Molino tries to be a peacemaker and a fan reaches over to grab a plastic chair.

But a staff member then comes into view and throws an object at a group of fans in the bleachers, escalating the already heightened tensions.

Another fan at the Haina Polideportivo is then able to grab chair, which was part of the setup of the Club Centro's bench area, and fling it at one of the players from Club Centro.

The player then reacted by throwing the chairs into a crowd, which was trying to run to the top of the stands, and hitting a fan.

All of the players from Club Centro then retreated from the court.

In additional video footage, players from El Molino confront rival sets of fans and while trying to confiscated the chairs, a fan races to the court and strikes a man with a chair over his head.

This brawl sure enough conjured memories of the infamous 'Malice at the Palace', almost 14 years ago to the day.

On November 19, 2004, an argument between players from the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers broke out into an all-out brawl.

But they then exchanged blows with fans who rushed the court and also threw objects from the stands.

The Dominican Basketball Federation issued a letter reprimanding the latest turn of events, almost three years after a similar brawl took place between fans and players from both sides during Game 5 of the 2015 Finals.

That championship was also suspended.

'These acts are considered by our governing institution of the Dominican Basketball as an unacceptable misconduct due to lack of control by the directors of the entity to safeguard the safety of everyone who was there,' the Federation said.

Club Centro [four titles] and El Molino [three championships] are two of the most successful teams since the Haina Superior Basketball Tournament was founded 11 years ago.
